With many bays protected and perfect swells, Hong-Kong is a dream place to pratice boat wakeboarding. Just watch Julian Shamdas making hits for instance. Here are the four best places for you and your friends !

263 islands

Amid the sweltering heat of Hong Kong’s summer, what outdoor activity can possibly beat wakeboarding with your family and friends ?

Towed behind a speedboat, riders use the wake from the boat rather than the water’s natural breaks to hit the air and show off their best tricks. Don’t worry if you’re new to the sport, there are many coaches in the city and they can help with renting equipment and a boat. Hong Kong’s unique geography of 263 islands and rugged coastline makes it perfect for wakeboarders to cruise along calmer waters, undisturbed by incoming swells from the South China Sea. Here are a few places you can guarantee a good time at sea.

1- Tai Tam Bay, Hong Kong Island

On the southside of Hong Kong Island, Tai Tam provides a large, protected bay for wakeboarders. It is fairly convenient to get to. Take 6X bus from Central to Stanley Prison where wakeboarding speedboats are available for hire with experienced boat drivers that can give you a few pointers on improving your skills. However, it is recommended you check the weather first as a strong east wind can make the sea quite rough around the bay.

2- Deep Water Bay, Hong Kong Island

Nestled right around the corner from Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter, Deep Water Bay is a popular anchoring destination for yachts and wakeboarders. Accessibility could not be easier with Deep Water Bay being only 20 minutes drive from Central via the Aberdeen Tunnel. Wakeboarders can enjoy the view of Hong Kong’s most luxurious yachts while gliding along calm ocean waters on the back of a speedboat. When Deep Water Bay gets a little too crowded, wakeboarders can head over to Repulse Bay where a similar experience awaits.

3- Sai Kung Harbour, New Territories

Sai Kung Harbour is one of the most popular places to wakeboard in Hong Kong. You will often see experts pull off flips, 720-degree spins and all sorts of cool tricks. The harbour is rarely affected by incoming swells because of its protection by nearby islands. Although it may get crowded on the weekends, its large area offers plenty of space for speedboats to cruise along. Sai Kung offers a wide variety of high-quality inboard and outboard speedboats available for hire, including top-of-the-line Malibu boats and MasterCraft boats that can provide wake-surfing as well. Not to mention its proximity to Sai Kung town, where some of the best seafood in Hong Kong is served. How to get there: Take the 101M bus from Hang Hau MTR station.

4- Tolo Harbour, Tai Po

Tolo Harbour offers vast amounts of space and calm waters for wakeboarders to shred. The harbour is well protected from all directions and does not contain heavy boat traffic. It has arguably the calmest waters to wakeboard in Hong Kong. In-board speedboats are available for hire starting from HK$500 an hour. Wakeboarders can enjoy the views of Plover Cove Reservoir as they ride along. How to get there: 72A bus from Tai Po Market MTR Station.

FOXLAKE DUNDEE OPENS A WAKEBOARDING PARK AT
DUNDEE’S WATERFRONT, CREATING EIGHT NEW JOBS

The team behind the award-winning outdoor adventure company, Foxlake Adventures opens a new wakeboarding park, Foxlake Dundee, at the city’s waterfront this weekend, (Saturday, 26th August), creating eight full and part-time jobs, including British Waterski & Wakeboard accredited cable operators and instructors.

The Wakeboarding Centre at City Quay, which also features Stand Up Paddleboarding, will run British Waterski & Wakeboard ‘Cutting Edge’ wakeboarding programmes to ensure the long-term sporting development of youngsters, which has been successfully completed by over 20,000 participants in the last five years at the site in Dunbar.

James Barbour, Director at Foxlake Dundee, said: “We are delighted to be bringing the Foxlake watersport experience and ‘Cutting Edge’ wakeboarding development programme to Dundee, which is a fantastic, thriving city going through a major regeneration, which we’re really excited to be a part of.

“Our opening weekend has been a huge success and we’re looking forward to welcoming even more people along, including schools and community groups in and around Dundee, to try out this fantastic sport, which is guaranteed to get you hooked first time.”

Alan Murray, Chief Operating Officer of Waterski & Wakeboard Scotland, said: “This urban waterski & wakeboarding park at Dundee City Quay is the perfect model offering easy accessibility and inclusion to a large catchment area in Dundee and the east of Scotland, which we are thrilled to be involved in.

“Not only will visitors to the park have an incredible wakeboarding experience, within a safe, enjoyable and unique setting, but the site will also provide great opportunities for locals to engage in coach education programmes and gain employment in the industry.”

Foxlake has worked closely with Dundee City Council at each stage of the project, which has been supported by the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund (RCGF); part of the financial support package provided by the Scottish Government as part of Achieving a Sustainable Future: The Regeneration Strategy.

Lynne Short, Convener of Dundee City Council’s City Development Committee, said: “We are very pleased to be able to support such an exciting and interesting activity thanks to money from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Growth Fund.

“As well as providing employment for locals, there are already plans to give young people across Dundee the opportunity to try wakeboarding. This will broaden their opportunities to find an activity that suits them which is not only great fun but will also improve their health and wellbeing.”

Jim Clarkson, VisitScotland’s Regional Partnerships Director for Dundee and Angus, said: “Scotland’s reputation as a quality destination relies on continued investment and innovation to ensure that current provision meets future demand. Foxlake’s new wakeboarding park promises to be an exciting addition to Dundee’s Waterfront and I’m sure it’ll be a massive hit with visitors and locals alike. The opening of the park is also timely with 2018 being the Year of Young People, when the spotlight shines on the amazing young personalities, talents, and achievers that make up Scotland.”

Foxlake, who work with various community partners and schools in East Lothian and Edinburgh, including Castlebrae High school, Dunbar Grammar and Preston Lodge High School where wakeboarding leadership programmes are part of the curriculum, have already put the wheels in motion to roll this out in Dundee by inviting pupils from Harris Academy to try out the sport at a preview of the park last week (Friday 25th August).

Built a wakeskate winch and flew it up to a 5000′ lake with a Schweizer 300. Then grabbed 4 people with the Robinson R44 and flew back up there to try out the new winch. We had never tried the winch out on the water, and neither of us had ever tried wakeskating before. It was a new experience and completely untested. After working out a few kinks we got it to work.

I don’t think I can put into words what I felt the first time I got tugged up and was wakeboarding on a mountain top glacier lake. The water was 12 degrees Celsius. It was the oddest feeling of combining something that I had done many times like wakeboarding behind a boat, but doing it on a glacier lake at 5000′ in the middle of nowhere. Breathtaking wouldn’t even begin to do it justice. I yelled out “YA FREAKEN YA!!!” as I skimmed across the water. That about sums it all up. Something never to be forgotten that’s for sure.
