Graeme Burress LandLOCKED …

While INSIGHT was receiving accolades and honors at the end of 2019 Graeme Burress was in a Philippines hospital looking at a rough x-ray.

He broke his arm which required multiple surgeries and almost six months of recovery. It’s a tough way to begin any season but Graeme has battled through tougher circumstances.

During his downtime he focused on developing his new pro model shape, the Blacklist, and mapping out everywhere he wanted to ride in 2020. Then Covid hit and flipped the switch yet again.

Graeme has been residing in Austin, TX, close to fellow Hyperlite team rider, JB O’Neill and the two of them hatched this idea to just load up the Prius and drive to every park they could.

Luckily for the two of them, master drone pilot and content creator Dave Averillo, or Dave AV, was stuck in Orlando with nothing to do. They found him a $23 airfare so they could all meet at The Levee Wake Park outside Dallas where they’d spend a couple weeks filming as Graeme was finally able to jump back on his board. From there the crew moved from wake park to wake park, winching along the way and capturing everything they could for Graeme’s LandLOCKED edit.

This edit is a continuation of where Graeme left off after INSIGHT, full of hammers, first-ever and gnarly stunts. 2020 was an unexpected season for us all, but according to Graeme, maybe being landlocked isn’t that bad and maybe it was just what he needed so he could focus on his wake boarding while visiting 13 parks throughout the US.

Food and Wake ,without any new arriving tourists, they have been wakeboarding a lot with the staff, and locals and residents. It’s been fun to bond, and see old friends again, which we lost track off during the busier tourism times.

To continue, they organised an open Wakepark Day, free for all locals and residents.

And now, they organise another project, called “Food and Wake” for Siargao Kids.

Last Saturday, they did their first try-out event and invited all kids from the local village Consuelo. More than 40 kids showed up and spent the afternoon laughing, swimming, wakeboarding and having a nice meal!

Since the opening 2 years ago, they have been wanting to start a community activity where the people of Siargao can benefit the wakepark and experience our way of riding.

These uncertain times calls for opportunity!

They’re inviting all the kids of the surrounding villages to come to the wakepark and have a delicious meal while learning how to wakeboard!

To make this happen, They  need your help!

They’re  now accepting donations.

For 2000php (40USD or 35EUR), you can help us accommodate 10 kids every hour in our “Wake and Food Program”. The more funds we raise, the more kids will be given a chance to enjoy this experience.

The wakepark activity expense, is brought to the bare minimum, enough to pay for the electricity, maintenance and staff. We want to keep open and give everyone on the island the opportunity to ride.

  Le Miss Wake Camp c’est Quoi ?  Comme chaque Année depuis maintenant plus de 12 ans l’association “Wake And Co” organise un évent 100% girls autour de la pratique du Wakeboard sur téléski-nautique .

Super nouvelle pour les rideuses ! Le stage de wakeboard 100% féminin MISS Wake Camp vient d’annoncer la date de son prochain camp ! Il se tiendra le week end du 12 au 13 septembre au câble d’Exo 3D dans l’Ain.

La vision du MISS Wake Camp est simple : progresser entre filles et dans la bonne humeur !
Le stage concerne absolument tous les niveaux, même les novices qui souhaitent s’initier. Et oui ! Même pas besoin de savoir rider pour participer, les rideuses sont toujours accueillies à bras ouverts.

Le rassemblement se déroule sur deux jours. A l’arrivée le vendredi soir, chacune définit ses objectifs en concertation avec les coachs. Des petits groupes de niveaux sont ainsi formés de manière homogène, encadrés par un ou une coach qui les accompagne durant tout le week end.

Le samedi soir, après une première journée de ride bien remplie, a lieu la traditionnelle soirée déguisée dont le thème varie chaque année. C’est l’occasion de se détendre et de renforcer la cohésion entre les filles, les coachs et les organisatrices.

Le dimanche, la matinée reprend activement sur le câble afin chaque rideuse peaufine ses objectifs, toujours dans la bonne humeur. L’après-midi, un contest « à la cool » permet à toutes celles qui le veulent de montrer leurs progrès aux copines ! Ce sont d’ailleurs ces progrès que notent les coachs, et non pas le meilleur trick. A chaque passage tout le monde s’encourage, et il y a de jolis lots à la clef pour tout le monde pour se motiver encore plus !

Pour donner un aperçu, l’année dernière les sponsors ont été très généreux : Des néoprènes et de la wear SOÖRUZ, des trousses KATAEA, des lunettes en bois IN’BO Manufacture, des T-shirts DZ1VOLT, des casquettes GIRLS UP!, des cintres INSTANT PLOK…Les plus chanceuses sont même reparties avec une board DECATHLON WAKEBOARDING ou METHOD WATERSPORTS, gagnées par tirage au sort. En effet, toujours dans souci d’équité, ce ne sont pas forcément les rideuses qui ont le meilleur niveau qui sont récompensées par les plus gros lots !

La force du MISS Wake Camp réside dans l’émulation entre les filles et le bon esprit sur le ponton, puisque être entourée d’autres rideuses de tous niveaux aide à se décomplexer et à se surpasser ! En effet, on sait qu’être une fille dans un sport majoritairement masculin peut représenter un frein, une peur du jugement. Or, ici, chaque premier départ ou chaque nouveau trick est salué par la joie de tout.e.s.

Et ça fonctionne ! Depuis 12 ans, ce sont plus de 300 participantes à qui le concept du MISS Wake Camp à permis de progresser !

Interview : Sandrine Beslot, créatrice du MISS WAKE CAMP

Sandrine Beslot, c’est pile le genre de fille qu’on aime : motivée, gaie, bon esprit, avec toujours mille et une idées. L’une d’entre elle a été de créer le MISS, Meet In Sane Session, un week end de wake ouvert à toutes les girls. Après avoir beaucoup ridé en compétition, Sand’ profite maintenant à fond des wake trips. Rencontre avec une hyperactive !

*Salut Sandrine, présente toi, qui es tu et que fais tu?

Salut ! Eh bien, avide de sensations fortes et spécialement de glisse depuis fort  longtemps, j’ai découvert le wakeboard sur téléski à Cergy en région parisienne. J’ai rapidement fait de la compétition avec la Fonchy Family qui était à l’époque (2003) la première asso de wake en France. J’ai remporté les championnats de France de 2004 à 2007 + des participations en Europe et Monde.

J’ai ensuite organisé le M.I.S.S. en 2005 avec ma compère et amie rideuse Carole Marmonier. En effet, les filles ont été longues à s’y mettre et il nous semblait important de les y encourager.

Maintenant, si je participe toujours quand j’en ai l’occasion, la compétition m’intéresse moins, mais j’ai toujours le même plaisir à rider et surtout, je progresse encore. Je ride un peu partout mais le plus souvent au téléski d’Exo Loisirs à la Rena (Bourg-en-Bresse) qui me sponsorise, et avec l’association Annecy Wake Family qui se bouge bien pour démocratiser le wake en France. Je m’éclate aussi en snow l’hiver, en surf et je commence à me mettre au kite pour varier les plaisirs 😉 !

Mon taf en tant que freelance dans l’événementiel (régie, logistique, prod) me permet d’organiser ma vie avec pas mal de flexibilité et donc de m’alimenter de projets artistiques et de nourrir mon insatiable curiosité de la vie (voyage, etc.).

*Parles nous un peu du MISS ?

Le M.I.S.S. (Meet In Sane Session) est donc un wakecamp pour les filles, quelque soit leur niveau. De la découverte à la préparation à la compétition, nous proposons aux rideuses de passer un week-end sur le thème du wakeboard. Aucune exigence hormis être âgée d’au moins 18 ans (pas de limite d’âge, j’ai moi-même 42 ans !) et d’aimer partager ses passions.
La recette est simple : 5h de ride par jour + coaching, training et stretch, debriefing vidéo entre 2 sessions et un brin de folie bien sûr…

*Où rides tu le plus l’été ?

Je suis une « globe-trotteuse » ! Je bouge pas mal, mais j’aime particulièrement Exo La Rena, près de Bourg-en-Bresse, et Barcarès, où tu peux rider sur un câble classique et sur un 2 poulies.

*En tant que « globe rideuse » donc, quels sont tes spots de prédilection à l’étranger pour tes wake trips?
Le wake-trip, comme tous les voyages, c’est un excellent mélange de potes riders, de nouveaux spots, de fête et de grand n’importe-quoi 🙂 ! Évoluer sur différents câbles est, d’après moi, le meilleur moyen de progresser en wake car tu dois t’adapter constamment (traction différentes, nouveaux modules, etc.). A l’étranger, je citerais, entre autres, le Thaï Wake Park à Bangkok en Thaïlande, le CWC aux Philippines, l’Hip-Notics en Turquie ou encore l’île de Krk en Croatie. Mais, quand je pars à l’autre bout du monde, je ne peux pas me limiter au wakeboard, il y a beaucoup trop de choses à découvrir 😉 !

*Quel est le pourcentage de filles dans le milieu du wake ? Y’a t’il une augmentation ?

Nous étions 15 en 2005. en 2010 , le M.I.S.S. comptait 55 filles !!! La progression du nombre de rideuses est évidente et cela sur tous les câbles en France. Je parle surtout de téléski car je ne suis pas une spécialiste du bateau. Comme dans les autres sports de glisse tel que le snow et le kite (en surf c’est une évidence depuis un moment), les filles sont de plus en plus nombreuses et il semble que ce ne soit qu’un début 😉 !

*Qu’aimerais tu dire à celles qui ne font pas encore de wake et qui hésitent à s’y mettre ?

De foncer! Car ce n’est pas très compliqué et le plaisir de la glisse est immédiat !

I’ve met some really amazing people from all over the world, it’s really been the best 10 years of my Life, i can’t thank everyone and the sport enough for the opportunity and support to express myself on the water .

More About Kim Yong Il and CWC

Kim is a real mystery Guy when we meet him first time  in the Philippines  at CWC wakepark it was in 2010 during an UNLEASHED WAKE trip there to film and shoot some french and international riders . We saw the most stylish guy of the park , and we didn’t know him before  , we just saw  this guy landed some insane tricks like nobody Before …

After a bunch time with him he tell us his own history , explain how  he start Pro Snowboarder  career in South Corea  and become a Snowboard legend there in a few year jumping and Landing tricks bigger and smarter than the others guys  , now we understand from where become this insane style in Wakeboarding …

Kim decide to leave his snowboard carrier and Become a Wake instructor at CWC , “the place to be” during few years  . He spend all his winter time there teaching people and help to grow the sports in the Philippines .

He train locals riders to become the future Philippinos Stars of Wakeboarding and help them to get a better life with the sport .

After , during summer , Kim come back to south corea , where he manage now a  wake board school There

Daniel Grant Said : Filmed during the same time as the last edit, but Filmed by KIM YONG IL Kim is a cwc legend has such a unique riding style, seeing him ride back at CWC was so smooth and he was pushing rail riding before it was even a thing, I’m sure he inspired many others who were there! Thank You Kim for helping me ride the way I do, filming me whenever we get the chance to hangout and for all the good memories !
