2025 Centurion World Wake Surfing Championship: When Progression Met Perfection

By Philippe Sirech

Let me tell you something about the 2025 Centurion World Wake Surfing Championship — this wasn’t just another contest. This was wakesurfing stripped down to its raw, beautiful essence and then rebuilt into something that redefined what we thought was possible.

For one week, the water became a stage. The riders? They weren’t just competitors. They were artists with fiberglass under their feet, painting lines across Centurion’s liquid canvas that’ll be remembered long after the trophy photos fade.

The Wake That Changed Everything

I’ve been on a lot of boats. I’ve seen a lot of wakes. But what Centurion delivered this year wasn’t just good — it was surgical precision wrapped in raw power. Clean. Consistent. Unforgiving in the best possible way.

These wakes didn’t make excuses. They demanded excellence, and the riders answered back with a middle finger to gravity and a masterclass in style.

From the first heat, you could feel it. The electricity. That crackling tension when you know you’re about to witness something that’ll shift the sport’s axis. Riders lined up, locked in, and proceeded to dismantle every preconception about what’s possible on a wake.

The playbook got rewritten. Then burned. Then rewritten again.

The Gladiators and the Groms

The pros brought violence — the good kind. The kind that makes you put your phone down and actually watch. Explosive airs that seemed to defy the laws of physics. Rotations so clean you could set your watch by them. And that flow — that ineffable blend of power and grace that separates the champions from the merely talented.

But here’s what got me: the kids.

These young guns showed up with YouTube education and zero fear, throwing tricks that would’ve been podium-worthy five years ago like they were warming up. They didn’t just want a seat at the table — they brought their own damn chairs.

Every division delivered:

Amplitude that threatened low-flying aircraft.

Spins and reverts that borrowed from skateboarding’s best vocabulary and translated it to water with perfect fluency.

Technical wizardry that proved wakesurfing has officially graduated from “fun boat thing” to legitimate athletic art form.

The judges had their work cut out for them. This wasn’t just about counting rotations anymore. They were scoring style, commitment, and that intangible quality that makes you rewind the footage three times just to figure out what you just witnessed.

More Than a Competition — It’s a Movement

Here’s what the mainstream media doesn’t get about events like this: it’s not about the trophies.

Sure, everybody wants to win. But walk the shoreline at dawn and you’ll find something deeper. Families who’ve been coming for years. Kids getting autographs from heroes who probably learned the same tricks on the same YouTube channels. Industry veterans swapping stories with first-timers who just discovered the sport last summer.

This is community, uncensored and unfiltered.

The Centurion Championship has always understood this. Between heats, you’d find athlete panels where the pros talked about the reality behind the Instagram posts — the injuries, the doubts, the 4 a.m. gym sessions. Brand activations that actually felt authentic instead of corporate. Demos where everyday riders could feel what $200K worth of engineering feels like under their feet.

The vibe wasn’t manufactured. It was earned. One session, one conversation, one shared moment of stoke at a time.

The Machine Behind the Magic

Let’s talk about the elephant in the boat — or more accurately, the masterpiece of marine engineering that made all this possible.

Centurion Boats.

Since 1976, these guys have been in the wake-creation business, and they’ve elevated it to an art form. Under the Correct Craft umbrella with their “Making Lives Better” mission (which sounds corporate until you see it in action), Centurion has consistently delivered what riders actually need: wakes that don’t lie.

No excuses. No inconsistency. Just pure, predictable power that lets athletes focus on progression instead of fighting the platform.

The riders felt it. I saw it in their faces after runs — that look that says, “The wake gave me everything I needed. The rest was on me.”

That’s the difference between good equipment and great equipment. Great equipment disappears, leaving only pure performance.

Why This Matters (And Why You Should Care)

The 2025 championship wasn’t just a snapshot of where wakesurfing is — it was a declaration of where it’s going.

This sport is shedding its “niche water activity” skin and emerging as something bigger. The progression curve isn’t just steep; it’s nearly vertical. What was cutting-edge at this event will be standard by next year. What seemed impossible will be in tutorial videos by summer.

We’re watching a sport come of age in real-time, and events like this are the mile markers that prove it’s not just growing — it’s evolving.

For those of us who’ve been covering wake sports for years, this championship felt different. More polished but not sanitized. More professional but not corporate. More competitive but not cutthroat.

It felt like wakesurfing finally figured out its identity — and decided to turn that identity up to eleven.

The Final Word

The 2025 Centurion World Wake Surfing Championship delivered what great events always do: moments that’ll live longer than the medals. Performances that’ll inspire the next generation. And proof that when you combine world-class athletes with world-class equipment and a community that genuinely gives a damn, something magical happens.

Centurion didn’t just host a championship. They provided the stage for wakesurfing’s loudest statement yet:

We’re here. We’re progressing. And we’re just getting started.

The Rise of Wake Boats: A Game-Changing Watersport Experience

the rise of Wake Boats:

What Do We Understand by Wake Boarding?

Wake boarding is a type or kind of watersports enjoyed by thousands of people all across the globe. As the name suggests, the latter is an activity conducted or performed on waterbodies. Thus, the game or sport remains open to interested participants in areas with ample water. It can consist of lakes, rivers, places with accessible water bodies, and even beaches.

In wake boarding, the rider has to stand on a particular surface or plank named the wake board. It comes with bindings where the participant can bind their feet to avoid falling off in the water. The board, secured with a rope or cable system, gets towed by a motorboat, generally called the wake boat. It helps create waves behind the vessel that facilitate and favor the riders to perform various stunts and aerial maneuvers.

Overall, wake boarding combines various sports. It consists of snowboarding, surfing, and water skiing. It gets done primarily for the fun and excitement of the activity. In addition to that, several places organize competitions and events to set a spirited and driven attitude among the participants. Thus, in conventional cases and scenarios, the wake boat and gear can get personalized and customized to the rider’s preferences and requirements.

How Did Wake Boarding Come into Fame as a Watersports?

The rise of wake boards started in the early 20th century when people began using motorized boats for various recreational purposes. It included sports like water skiing and fishing. At that time, the riders used wooden planks instead of appropriate ski gears and a rope to pull the board with the help of a motorboat. It led to water skiing becoming popular among enthusiasts. Furthermore, it resulted in its first official tournament getting organized in 1949.

As water skiing gained fame, the demand for distinct motorboats for the sport increased. They had to get designed uniquely for the game. Initially, generalized or slightly modified versions of the vessels existed. However, with the increase in the events’ competitiveness, boats with powerful engines and V-shaped hulls started getting manufactured. It provided more stability and speed for water skiing.

Wakeboarding came into existence a little later, with its roots in three different sports. Its traces go back to the 1980s when some water skiers started experimenting to find new ways to ride on a wake. It led to the creation of skurfing, where the riders had to ride a surfboard pulled by a boat with the help of a handle and a rope.

Skurfing soon became popular among watersports enthusiasts, and its name changed to skiboarding. It, in turn, resulted in the establishment and foundation of the World Skiboard Association and the Skurfer Skiboard World Championships. With a change in the board designs, the name changed to The World Wakeboarding Association.

The modern wake boards we see today had gotten designed and produced by Herb O’Brien’s company. The initial ones were wider and shorter than the traditional boards. In addition to that, they have fins on the bottom for more control and stability. Furthermore, they designed a binding system that enabled the riders to perform more tricks and have better control over their movements.

From the later 1990s to the early 2000s, the watersports of wakeboarding gained immense popularity with the invention of cable parks. They allowed riders to follow behind a cable system without any vessel. Today, wake boarding is a sport that can get enjoyed by people of all skill levels and ages. With various technological advancements, wake boats and boards have become exceedingly versatile and efficient. It enables riders to perform more and better skills.

The rise of wake boarding and wake boat or wake surf boat is also thanks to several people who gave their best efforts over the years. For instance, Tony Finn gets regarded as the “Father of Wakeboarding.” He invented the wake boards, an essential component necessary for the sport. In addition, Jimmy Redmon is another renowned figure related to the watersport. He contributed significantly to developing and improving the ski rope for wake boarding.

What is the Current Scenario of Wake Boarding Today?

Today, wake boarding is one of the most famous and tried-out watersports. People of all ages and expertise levels try it out. On top of that, several competitions and tournaments related to the game get organized in numerous places all across the globe.

The sport and its equipment have undergone enhancements and improvements continually since its first application. It has allowed the riders to perform several tricks on the water and even mid-air. On top of that, the participants can select and customize their wake boat and wake board according to their unique needs, requirements, and desires. It helps when the eminent need to personalize the equipment to achieve a particular goal or trick arises.

In 2018 they were first, now they are better ! Presenting the new and redesigned Unit Surf Pool V2 at its first location in Milan, Italy. The floating UNIT Surf Pool creates a big and powerful artificial stationary deepwater wave in a natural water environment, while using less energy for a bigger wave. This makes the UNIT surf pool the most efficient and eco-friendly artificial wave solution on the market.

The wave

Check out Daniel Grant’s signature feature for Unit.

What’s new ?

Steel : the Unit Surf Pool V2 has been redesigned as a highly durable and modular floating steel construction that can be expended to any width, even beyond 16m.

Wave : the new open wave shape creates a surfable wave face up to 1,80m that allows for massive bottom turns and maneuvers.

Power : While creating a better and more powerful wave, they have managed to reduce energy consumption to 280kw/h for a beginner session

” The wave is super easy for beginners to start and very addictive for more experienced surfers.”

The Malibu WWA Rider Experience Central joined forces with Texas’ infamous Wake the Desert event bringing together the top amateurs and professional riders to celebrate Wake the Desert’s 20th Anniversary.

Recap

San Angelo

Hosted by the crew at Family Powersports, riders felt like rockstars behind the Malibu 25LSV and M235 all weekend long. Focused on rider development, the event began with Freeride Friday, giving competitors, family and friends the opportunity to hang out and learn from their favorite Malibu Pro athletes. Alongside Freeride Friday, Wake the Desert’s amateur wakesurf divisions hit the water laying down competition firsts and setting the pace for the rest of the weekend. Saturday’s WWA Regional Championships Central included all WWA amateur and Jr. Pro divisions along with Wake the Desert Outlaw semifinal rounds. The weekend wrapped up with Surf Gate Sunday where riders were able to experience the endless wave of Malibu’s world-class line of boats and take inspiration from today’s stars with the Wake the Desert Outlaw and Pro Wakesurf and Wakeboard Finals.

“We had a blast in Texas this weekend! It was great watching the next up and comers in wake interact with the Malibu Pro athletes and take inspiration from all of the talented riders who came to compete at the Malibu Rider Experience Central and Wake the Desert. We are so privileged to work with such great partners like Malibu Boats and Family Powersports, and we look forward to seeing everyone for the final U.S. stop in Virginia next weekend,” commented WWA Executive Director, Corrie Wilson.

Wakesurf

Friday set the pace for the amount of talent Lake Nasworthy would see throughout the weekend with Reese Hunt III (TX) bringing a unique longboard style to the wakesurf community throwing deep bottom turns and walking up and down the board for a final score of 76.67. The Junior Wakesurf division showcased nine tremendously talented rippers of which Stella Tracy (OK) came out on top with a super steady body varial for a score of 68.33 in the final round.

The smiles were contagious during Saturday’s WWA Regional Championships as riders threw down in front of their hometown crowd for a chance to represent the Central region at the upcoming WWA Wakeboard National Championships. In the Jr. Boy’s Beginner division, local Texan Kyle Bendele (TX) threw a huge H/S wake to wake indy grab to earn his first place finish and a score of 86.67. Alex Albin (CA) claimed the top spot in the Boys division throwing a tootsie roll for a first place score of 86.33. The Jr. Women’s division saw Ellie Patrick (TX) take the win with a H/S back roll and a melan grab for a score of 80.00. Ainsley Harper (TX) came in second throwing a fashion air for a score of 61.67, followed by Logan Vaughan (TX) in third scoring 55.00.

The Jr. Pro division brought some of the world’s best to Texas with Fynn Bullock-Womble (USA) taking home his first Jr Pro Series win. Laying down his unique style Fynn started off his run with a H/S B/S 720 followed by a cab 720 earning his first place finish and a score of 85.00. Thomas Herman (USA) landed a second place finish with a textbook KGB to score 76.00, followed by Bryce Grey (AUS) in third with a final score of 72.67.

Wakeboard

Still grinning from a weekend of accomplishments, riders and families took to the water behind the Malibu 25LSV for the Surf Gate Sunday wakesurf experience before packing the shoreline for the Outlaw and Pro division finals of Wake the Desert. San Angelo local, Gentry Slayden (USA) came out on top in the Outlaw Women’s Wakesurf division with a winning score of 70.00. In the Pro Men’s Wakeurf division, Keenan Flegel (USA) took the win with a backside big spin and shuvs in every direction to complete his winning run for a score of 83.33, just ahead of his brother Noah Flegel (USA) who finished second with an 81.67.

Malibu Athlete Tarah Mikacich (USA) annihilated the wake of the Malibu M235 to take the win in the Outlaw Women’s Wakeboard division throwing a wrapped KGB to secure her final score of 65.00. Charli Shore (AUS) came in second throwing a tootsie roll for her final score of 56.67, followed by Dallas Friday (USA) in third. Rockstar Energy athlete Tony Iacconi (AUS) made it out on top of an intense Outlaw Men’s Wakeboard final round sticking a front mobe 540 for a score of 90.00. Noah Flegel (USA) scored 81.67 in second putting down a super stylish melan back mobe, just ahead of Luca Kidd (GBR) in third with a score of 77.67.

Next stop

The Malibu WWA Rider Experience heads north to Spotsylvania, Virginia July 19 – 21 for the next round of the world’s most popular rider development series and the final WWA Wakeboard National Championship qualifier.

Recently, our partner SpotyRide has evolved. A new logo, new sports included, easier to use, in short, a brand new solution provided by the start-up. If evolutions will still happen because the solution is not finished, it is already ultra-complete on the wakeboard… its preferred field. Presentation of this new version.

All nautical activities

A new version to geolocate all the spots in France and abroad, and to know everything about the sports and water rides on offer ! Created by Sophie Combettes-Sirech and Wakeboard World Champion Philippe Sirech, Spotyride is a sports solution designed to meet the needs of families and ride enthusiasts who are looking to find out what activities to enjoy this summer at their holiday spots. With Spotyride, you no longer have to run to the tourist office and stack a lot of brochures, this new application identify from your mobile all the sports activities (wake, kitesurfing, canoeing, paddle, sailing, hiking…) offered by the nearby water sports centres. The most ? This summer, the bases will enter their information directly into the application (sports, schedules, prices, reservations, specific promotions, etc.) to facilitate the arrival of practitioners in their centre. Everything is ready to enjoy a “sporty” summer.

One app to plan you sports holidays

Available free of charge on iOS and Android in French and English, the mobile application Spotyride or the website geolocate spots, identify different activities, consult offers and book within nautical structures. It is easy to search for different activities and organize them around your holiday destination thanks to the wide choice available nationally and internationally. New activities will be on offer this summer (parasailing, catamaran, rafting, canyoning) in addition to the mythical: kitesurfing, windsurfing, jet skiing, paddle, wakeboard… More than a dozen sports are currently available.

Today Spotyride refers more than 1,000 structures worldwide and plans to reach 4,000 by the end of the year. Spotyride’s ambition is to offer a more connected and free offer to users of the solution and to extend it to other leisure sports in France and around the world. With Spotyride, searching multiple websites is no longer necessary. It is now easy to book different activities around you with only one click. The new version of Spotyride has detailed technical data sheets on all structures (bases and water parks) as well as on all sports. Each sheet has been designed to make simple, fast and intuitive operation.

The solution for all nautical bases

Responding to a lack of digitisation on the part of leisure facilities, the Spotyride application allows all professionals in the leisure sector to reference their own nautical base, to offer rapid access to reservations, to gain visibility and to inform all practitioners and families in search of multi-activities and a wider discovery of the environment.
Spotyride offers leisure centres autonomous management of information that is updated directly on the mobile application. Structures thus have privileged access at their disposal, allowing them to update their information in real time and manage their communication very easily via their Spotyride backoffice. They can modify schedules, prices, courses, events and can add photos and videos to highlight their spots. A unique communication space to attract the entire Spotyrid community!
