2025 Centurion World Wake Surfing Championship: When Progression Met Perfection

By Philippe Sirech

Let me tell you something about the 2025 Centurion World Wake Surfing Championship — this wasn’t just another contest. This was wakesurfing stripped down to its raw, beautiful essence and then rebuilt into something that redefined what we thought was possible.

For one week, the water became a stage. The riders? They weren’t just competitors. They were artists with fiberglass under their feet, painting lines across Centurion’s liquid canvas that’ll be remembered long after the trophy photos fade.

The Wake That Changed Everything

I’ve been on a lot of boats. I’ve seen a lot of wakes. But what Centurion delivered this year wasn’t just good — it was surgical precision wrapped in raw power. Clean. Consistent. Unforgiving in the best possible way.

These wakes didn’t make excuses. They demanded excellence, and the riders answered back with a middle finger to gravity and a masterclass in style.

From the first heat, you could feel it. The electricity. That crackling tension when you know you’re about to witness something that’ll shift the sport’s axis. Riders lined up, locked in, and proceeded to dismantle every preconception about what’s possible on a wake.

The playbook got rewritten. Then burned. Then rewritten again.

The Gladiators and the Groms

The pros brought violence — the good kind. The kind that makes you put your phone down and actually watch. Explosive airs that seemed to defy the laws of physics. Rotations so clean you could set your watch by them. And that flow — that ineffable blend of power and grace that separates the champions from the merely talented.

But here’s what got me: the kids.

These young guns showed up with YouTube education and zero fear, throwing tricks that would’ve been podium-worthy five years ago like they were warming up. They didn’t just want a seat at the table — they brought their own damn chairs.

Every division delivered:

Amplitude that threatened low-flying aircraft.

Spins and reverts that borrowed from skateboarding’s best vocabulary and translated it to water with perfect fluency.

Technical wizardry that proved wakesurfing has officially graduated from “fun boat thing” to legitimate athletic art form.

The judges had their work cut out for them. This wasn’t just about counting rotations anymore. They were scoring style, commitment, and that intangible quality that makes you rewind the footage three times just to figure out what you just witnessed.

More Than a Competition — It’s a Movement

Here’s what the mainstream media doesn’t get about events like this: it’s not about the trophies.

Sure, everybody wants to win. But walk the shoreline at dawn and you’ll find something deeper. Families who’ve been coming for years. Kids getting autographs from heroes who probably learned the same tricks on the same YouTube channels. Industry veterans swapping stories with first-timers who just discovered the sport last summer.

This is community, uncensored and unfiltered.

The Centurion Championship has always understood this. Between heats, you’d find athlete panels where the pros talked about the reality behind the Instagram posts — the injuries, the doubts, the 4 a.m. gym sessions. Brand activations that actually felt authentic instead of corporate. Demos where everyday riders could feel what $200K worth of engineering feels like under their feet.

The vibe wasn’t manufactured. It was earned. One session, one conversation, one shared moment of stoke at a time.

The Machine Behind the Magic

Let’s talk about the elephant in the boat — or more accurately, the masterpiece of marine engineering that made all this possible.

Centurion Boats.

Since 1976, these guys have been in the wake-creation business, and they’ve elevated it to an art form. Under the Correct Craft umbrella with their “Making Lives Better” mission (which sounds corporate until you see it in action), Centurion has consistently delivered what riders actually need: wakes that don’t lie.

No excuses. No inconsistency. Just pure, predictable power that lets athletes focus on progression instead of fighting the platform.

The riders felt it. I saw it in their faces after runs — that look that says, “The wake gave me everything I needed. The rest was on me.”

That’s the difference between good equipment and great equipment. Great equipment disappears, leaving only pure performance.

Why This Matters (And Why You Should Care)

The 2025 championship wasn’t just a snapshot of where wakesurfing is — it was a declaration of where it’s going.

This sport is shedding its “niche water activity” skin and emerging as something bigger. The progression curve isn’t just steep; it’s nearly vertical. What was cutting-edge at this event will be standard by next year. What seemed impossible will be in tutorial videos by summer.

We’re watching a sport come of age in real-time, and events like this are the mile markers that prove it’s not just growing — it’s evolving.

For those of us who’ve been covering wake sports for years, this championship felt different. More polished but not sanitized. More professional but not corporate. More competitive but not cutthroat.

It felt like wakesurfing finally figured out its identity — and decided to turn that identity up to eleven.

The Final Word

The 2025 Centurion World Wake Surfing Championship delivered what great events always do: moments that’ll live longer than the medals. Performances that’ll inspire the next generation. And proof that when you combine world-class athletes with world-class equipment and a community that genuinely gives a damn, something magical happens.

Centurion didn’t just host a championship. They provided the stage for wakesurfing’s loudest statement yet:

We’re here. We’re progressing. And we’re just getting started.

Conditions on Koombana Bay, Bunbury Western Australia once again proved challenging at first and didn’t really let up all day so it became of a battle of the elements and who could buckle down and cope with the choppy conditions and Koombana Bay.

Event Dates : Saturday 29 February and Sunday 1 March 2020

The Highlights

The six-man final saw seasoned professionals Cory Teunissen (Gold Coast), Callan Starr (Ascot, WA), Shota Tezuka (Shizuoka, Japan) Sam Brown (Thirlmere, NSW), Josh Quartermaine (Cottesloe, WA) and making debut his debut Tom Heatly (Rossmoyne, WA) going head to head and battling it for $15,000 in prize money.

Tournament Director Mike Hogarth called the Action Sports Games Pro Wakeboard Tournament on after a meeting with the riders. “Water conditions improved since the morning and the wind has back off little so we’ll get on the water see how it all plays out” said Hogarth.

Defending champion Shota Tezuka (Jpn) went into the competition as the favourite and started his run impressively with some massive moves however after a couple of falls he knew it was going to be a tough challenge to make a podium finish. “Last year, I felt so confident going into the final and maybe that over confidence pulled me unstuck this year” said Tezuka, adding “the conditions were tough out there on Koombana Bay and when the wind turned that made the water bumpy and difficult to land your tricks”.

Dark horse and local talent, Callan Starr was pretty happy with his flawless run and really pulled out some big moves to place second behind Teunissen.
Starr took on the testing waters of Koombana Bay and wasn’t too fazed by the choppy cross shore conditions. “Coming from WA, I’m pretty use to tough water condition and I love competing in the Action Sports Games so I’m very happy with finishing second as it is fantastic result for me.…thanks heaps Bunbury…I’ll be back” said Starr.

Teunissen is no stranger to the sometimes wild conditions of Western Australia and went into the tournament looking relaxed and confident so he certainly had the water conditions dialled in to suit his style. Checking out the conditions early and seeing what the other competitors had strung together on their runs, Teunissen went to work like a quality tradesman, building on his repertoire of moves. He started out by testing the conditions and once he had that sorted, he was unstoppable. Although Teusnissen was easily the standout of the tournament and the judges were impressed with his solid combinations of tricks, so they rewarded him accordingly.

Taking out first place, Teunissen was ecstatic, “I am so happy to finish first on the podium and, it gives me a lot of confidence going into the rest of year, so really happy I came to Bunbury…its such a beautiful place…I’ll be back that’s for sure”. Teunissen added.

Wakeboard and skimboard action lure pros and beginners

Among the trade fair highlights for the board artists at boot Düsseldorf were the legendary Cable Mekka Awards. Around 500 riders and proud members of the community plus many friends met in the Cinema Filmkunstkino, to which the organizers of The Cable magazine and boot Düsseldorf had invited for the 20th awarding of the coveted trophies. Felix Georgii (Kranzegg) and Anne Freyer (Mannheim) were presented with the “Rider of the Year” awards. Eight other awards for exceptional performances and documentaries from the wakeboard world demonstrated the diversity of this growing community. At the height of the evening, Wakeboard veteran and boot presenter Clint Liddy was moved to tears. The Australian living in Frankfurt (“The Wakeboard Voice”) was honored for his lifetime achievement and said: “I never saw that coming. I am very happy that I can celebrate this matter of my heart here at boot with the entire industry.” And the industry had many reasons more to be pleased, as the Brand Manager of Liquid Force Germany put it. Karsten Krey said: “I have been at this trade fair for 40 years and can say: There was a buzzing this year! For the scene, the boot Düsseldorf is the highlight in winter.” The Pooltastic Wakeboard Contest in the flatwater pool was won by Nico von Lerchenfeld from Cologne, ahead of Pedro Caldas from Brazil and Germany’s Max Milde. Later in the week, the finest skimboard techniques and stylish moves were presented by leading European skimboarders. Semjon Szillat and Lydia Blanke won the “Battle of the boot” for their Team Skimzone Germany. As a sporty and a private couple, both showed how versatile this Sport can be for everyone.

CORY TEUNISSEN AND MEAGAN ETHELL WIN THE 2019 NAUTIQUE MOOMBA MASTERS INTERNATIONAL INVITATIONAL

The Nautique Wake Series and WWA Wakeboard World Series (WBWS) kicked off what is expected to be one of the most competitive seasons yet at the 2019 Nautique Moomba Masters International Invitational. Riding behind the 6X Wakeboard Boat of the Year, the Super Air Nautique G23, the world’s best riders stole the show in front of over 400,000 cheering fans along Melbourne, Australia’s Yarra River with unbelievable performances. Proving that this generation of riders is the most committed and progressive in the history of the sport, every single run we saw was put down to not only win but make a statement for what’s to come for the 2019 season.

Looking to lock in the first win of the season, Nautique rider Cory Teunissen (AUS) displayed confidence throughout his entire run and kicking things off in his first pass with back to back F/S 900s. Teunissen went on to complete his flawless run with a super clean H/S B/S 720 followed by a final T/S double back roll to officially seal the deal for the top podium spot. Tyler Higham (USA) brought his unique west coast style to the final round of action with wrapped spins and a variety of grabs on all of his tricks locking in a massive second place finish on the Yarra. Higham also took the Rockstar Best Trick contest with his ever-stylish switch mute F/S 900. Coming in third, Ronix rider Nic Rapa (AUS) landed three massive back to back doubles to finish off his second pass, proving that he came to fight for his spot at the top this weekend.

The Pro Women’s Final was one to watch with five of the six finalists completing stand-up passes Monday afternoon. Meagan Ethell (USA) turned it up nailing a beautiful run that included a giant whirly bird, melon off axis 360, KGB, and H/S back roll for the win. Coming in second place and displaying the perfect amount of flips, spins, and amplitude off the wake of the legendary Super Air Nautique G23, Erika Lang (USA) set herself a part with one of the smoothest runs we’ve seen from the Nautique rider. Taking the Rockstar Best Trick award and rounding out the podium in third, Bec Gange (AUS) had the crowd screaming with her technical Indy Tantrum to Blind.

In the Jr. Women’s division, Aussie girl Mackenzie McCarthy (AUS) took home a big win, landing a huge Indy back roll to start off her run and finishing out with a crowd favorite and ever classic raley in her second pass. Haylee Bowman (AUS) placed second with style on every trick followed by Elle Christensen (USA) in third giving it everything she had to round out the podium. In the Jr. Pro Men’s division Joshua Swift (AUS) displayed one of the most impressive runs we’ve seen from a Juniors division, landing multiple 720s and closing out his run with a technical B/S 540. Bryce Grey (AUS) finished a close second with incredibly clean riding followed by the stylish Yu Hamazaki (JPN) in third.

Dedicated to progressing the sport from the ground up, the Nautique Wake Series puts riders first, developing the stars of tomorrow and showcasing the top athletes of today with every major event held behind the Super Air Nautique G23. The Nautique Wake Series is the only event series that gives riders of all ages, gender and skill level the opportunity to compete at an elite level.

ACTION SPORTS GAMES ARE BACK IN 2019 IN BUNBURY

After the success of the Action Sports Games (ASG) in 2018, the Bunbury Action Sports Games are back in Western Australia. From March 16 to 17, 2019, some of Australia’s top extreme sports stars competed for a cash prize of $20,000. Wakeboarding, freestyle motocross, skateboarding, BMX and scooter invaded the shores of the sea!

Despite the complicated weather conditions at the beginning of the day, the wind blew away and the event was once again a real success this year. Experienced professionals Nic Rapa (Hawksberry, NSW), Parker Seigle (Tanundra, SA) and Shota Tezuka (Shizuoka, Japan) competed against young Sam Brown (Thirlmere, NSW), Callan Starr (Ascot, WA) and Elliot Digney (Sydney, NSW).

Rapa went into the competition as the favourite and started his run impressively with some massive moves however after a couple of falls he knew it was going to be a tough challenge to finish first.

“Last year, I didn’t event make the podium so I am stoked with 3rd place” said Rapa, adding “the conditions were tough out there on Koombana Bay and when the wind turned that made the water bumpy and difficult to land your tricks”.

Dark horse, Parker Seigle was pretty happy with his flawless run and really pulled out some big moves to place second behind Tezuka.

Seigle took on the testing waters of Koombana Bay and wasn’t too fazed by the choppy cross shore conditions.

“Its been a while since I’ve been back to WA and I love coming here; finishing second is a fantastic result as I haven’t had a podium finish for a while…thanks heaps Bunbury…I’ll be back” said Parker.

Tezuka made his debut in Bunbury this year and was relaxed about the tournament and was keen to test his skills on the beautiful waters of Koombana Bay.

Checking out the conditions early and seeing what the other competitors had strung together on their runs, Tezuka went to work like a quality tradesman, building on his repertoire of moves. He started out by testing the conditions and once he had that sorted, he was unstoppable.

Tezuka was easily the standout of the tournament and the judges were impressed with his solid combinations of tricks so they rewarded him accordingly.

Taking out first place on his maiden trip to Bunbury, Tezuka was ecstatic, “I am so happy to finish first on the podium and its been a long time coming, it gives me a lot of confidence going into the rest of year, so really happy I came to Bunbury…its such a beautiful place…I’ll be back that’s for sure”. Tezuka added.

Final Results:
1st Shota Tezuka (JPN) – 78.89
2nd Parker Seigle (AUS) – 66.67
3rd Nic Rapa (AUS) – 65.00
4th Elliot Digney (AUS) – 63.89
5th Callan Starr (AUS) – 49.45
6th Sam Brown (AUS) – 43.89

More about the event :

This major event is set to become one of the richest wakeboarding events in Australia and given the fact that it is held the week after the Moomba Masters in Victoria and it will attract a top field of world class wakeboarders, fantastic media and promote the vibrancy of the City of Bunbury.
