I’m thankful to have been involved in this project and to have had the chance to compile the video. It offers a sneak peek into the overall vibe of the team and their core essence. Nikita saw a picture of a KAMAZ truck ripping down a levee across an artificial lake and thought to himself: “What if that mad truck towed me? I could do some sweet tricks.” And so a project for the future was born, and the people of the internet have picked the perfect location near Naberezhnye Chelny. Besides, Chelny is the birthplace and testing ground of the legendary truck, and the base of its racing team. Everything was coming together nicely. This, however, was the easy part. The practical part followed.

Nikita Martyanov highlights

“Our biggest problem was torque: we were trying to get a motorboat performance out of a racetruck. The race truck is built to rip up the track, it’s got mad torque numbers. At first I thought that I could just plan the route as if I was following the motorboat: I’ll just jump off of here, then go there, and it’s gonna be fun and easy. Things were… different! We ran our first test: we installed a ramp, dug out an area where I was going to land. When we were shooting the second take I landed like a foot away from the rocks. I couldn’t tell you the way it would go despite all my 23 years of experience in riding,” says the wakeboarder. The team had to adjust the way the truck accelerated and the speed at which it travelled several times. The position for the ramp has been revised and all the stones were cleared from the landing zone for safety.

Anton Shibalov, KAMAZ-Master team pilot, took on a new unfamiliar role: “Wakeboarding is a new experience for us all. KAMAZ is a powerful vehicle, you gotta be careful around it. First thing on my mind is getting off the start smoothly. Starting too fast will exert too much force on Nikita’s hands and legs. A racing start will tear up his joints. Which is why I start smooth and accelerate to speed we need smoothly. Our vehicle can do that too, thankfully. Here’s what was difficult though: I can hardly see anything out of my cabin. I can see something when we start moving, and I can see Nikita jumping to perform the tricks in my mirrors. It’s scary, really: I have to give him enough acceleration and speed to fly over the section of the levee. Because if I’m going too slow, below the speed we’ve discussed, he’ll dive straight into rocks, and that will be my fault.”

It took some test runs for the truck and the wakeboard to start cooperating. There were a lot of factors at play: the truck’s acceleration, the angle of Nikita’s jump, the speed of the jump above the levee. Speed and direction of wind are also important here. In snowboarding, motorcycle freestyle and other trick-oriented sports, the athlete lands on an incline that dampens the contact with the ground. In wakeboarding, the athlete lands on the level water surface. “I need to dampen all the power I get from accelerating with my body before I land. Usually I enter the water with the bottom of the boards, then the knees start working, and finally, you crouch way down. You only get so many tries to do it. I don’t think my chiropractor is going to approve of this,” says the athlete, sharing his impressions about the sport.

More about This Project

 

The project was a success — the KAMAZ-towed wakeboard tricks were even greater than anticipated, setting some records. 85 ft flight at 50 MPH, 33 ft above ground, landing on a level surface — nothing like that has been ever done in wakeboarding. Another discovery of the project: tire-ripping KAMAZ race truck can accelerate smoothly, just like a motorboat commonly used as a towing vehicle in wakeboarding.

“The experience was tremendous — nobody has experienced torque like this before, that’s for sure. Just the feeling of being pulled by a KAMAZ is a lot to take in, you know. You are bound to this huge crazy machine. And then there was the all-or-nothing jump I made. I don’t think anybody in wakeboarding as much as came close to this!” Nikita Martyanov told us.

Winch Part

The story

 “The goal was to think outside the box and hit natural terrain like the streets, forests and mountains. The problem was I didn’t really have any equipment nor the experience to bring such a project to life. So I called up my Hyperlite-Homie Nic Leduc and asked for his help. I ended up going on a trip to Montreal, Canada to film the first few clips for my part. It really was an all time experience, cause not only did we hit more spots than expected in the two weeks, but also I was able to develop the needed knowledge of how to actually set up the spot and more. With the support of The Cable Mag (by providing a Winch for me) I was able to go on the search for more spots back home in Germany. Winching definitely isn’t easy at all. You put in so much work spending hours and sometimes days just to get that one clip. Honestly, ‘playing’ in the mud was probably one of the worst days ever haha. But the satisfaction when finally getting the clip is simply the best and makes it all pay off. Thanks to everyone who helped making this happened. You know who you are. I’m really stoked with what we were able to put together and I can’t wait for my next urban adventures.” Bene Tremmel.

L’installation sera faite d’un winch électrique portable avec une corde de 140m sur la rive gauche et un retour sur la rive droite. Le rider partira de la plateforme devant le Pont de la Machine et utilisera la structure existante qui sera spécialement aménagée.

This year, the couple has chosen to take up a new challenge: to visit New Zealand and its gorgeous spots, with a Working Holiday VISA, they will fly to “Middle-earth”. Once there, the first mission will be to get a van to camp and a winch to discover idyllic spots for the two wakeskaters, in search of sensations !

As you might expect, this kind of adventure is expensive!

As Ken says: “We would really like to get a good drone to make a short film, credible, about our trip during the year. A short film of our adventures, based mainly on wakeskate, travel and landscapes. (…) We hope to bring back beautiful images and especially enjoy, discover and show our vision of wakeskate to those who are interested…”

Partners of the young DAB Wakeskate brand, but also helped by the city of Grenoble and their relatives, Ken and Deborah worked in France and then planned to find a job there. Less than 50 days before their departure, they call on the big water sports sports family! Indeed, they still need help to finance their drone, the Van and especially the equipment necessary to immortalize their adventures !

Ken est un wakeskater pour qui chaque point d’eau peut devenir un énorme spot de wakeskate ! Plus tôt, on l’a vu dans des sessions street en plein coeur de Grenoble ou encore dans des rivières en bordure de forêt cet hiver.

Alors cette année, c’est un nouveau défi que le couple a choisi de relever : partir visiter la Nouvelle Zélande et ses spots magnifiques.

C’est avec un VISA Working Holiday qu’ils vont s’envoler direction la “Terre du Milieu”. Une fois sur place la première mission sera de se procurer un Van pour camper et un winch pour partir à la recherche de spots idyllique pour les deux wakeskaters, à la recherche de sensations !

Comme vous vous doutez, ce genre d’aventure a un prix !

Comme le dit Ken : “On aimerait vraiment arriver à se procurer un bon drône pour arriver à rendre un court métrage, crédible, sur notre trip pendant l’année. Un mini film de nos aventures, basé essentiellement sur le wakeskate, le voyage et les paysages. (…) On espère ramener de belles images et surtout profiter, découvrir et montrer notre vision du wakeskate à ceux que ça intéresse…”

Partenaires de la jeune marque DAB Wakeskate, mais aussi aidés par la ville de Grenoble et leurs proches, Ken et Deborah ont travaillé en France puis prévu de trouver un job sur place. Moins de 50 jours avant leur départ, ils font appel à la grande famille de la glisse ! En effet, ils ont encore besoin d’un coup de main pour financer leur drône, le Van et surtout du matériel nécessaire pour immortaliser leurs aventures !

Red Bull’s Brian Grubb & Matti Buys Wakeskate Durban’s Beachfront

South Africa – 25 March 2019: Once described by CNN as the “coolest city in South Africa”, it’s no wonder that Durban is such a loved holiday destination. With its energetic beachfront, scenic water canals and uShaka Marine World, a more diverse and alluring backdrop for a wakeskating match-up you will struggle to find.

Wakeskating is a water sport that was adapted from wakeboarding, using a similar board but where the rider is not bound to the board. This offers the rider a level of freedom to accomplish an additional range of tricks that are similar to skateboarding.

Last summer, local wakeskate athlete, Matti Buys invited one of the most influential pioneers of the sport, Brian Grubb (USA) to South Africa to explore and session some of the most prominent spots around Durban. What transpired was an epic video short titled ‘Reflections’, which not only showcases Durban’s flair but some of the most imaginative trick lines and obstacles.

“Since my last first trip to South Africa back in 2006, I have always wanted to come back and see more. Durban was a perfect location to wakeskate and put this project together with Matti,” says Grubb, who has been dominating in the sport since his first pro tour in 2003.

In Red Bull’s ‘Reflections’, you will see a myriad of cables and high-powered winches taking Grubb and Buys from the Indian Ocean shoreline, to Durban Point Waterfront Canals, right through uShaka Marine World and onto Durban’s iconic beachfront pools. The duo creatively make use of their natural surroundings, adding obstacles like ramps or kickers to perform a host of tricks that one would normally expect to see on a lake or public cable park, yet this time in a much trickier and unique setting.

In South Africa, wakeskating is still very much a growing sport with a lot of potential and young talent continually raising through. “It is important for us as athletes who have spent a number of years building up the sport to continue to find creative ways to share our stories and to also put the sport of wakeskating in front of new, larger audiences,” concludes Buys.
