The Highlights

The six-man final saw seasoned professionals Cory Teunissen (Gold Coast), Callan Starr (Ascot, WA), Shota Tezuka (Shizuoka, Japan) Sam Brown (Thirlmere, NSW), Josh Quartermaine (Cottesloe, WA) and making debut his debut Tom Heatly (Rossmoyne, WA) going head to head and battling it for $15,000 in prize money.

Tournament Director Mike Hogarth called the Action Sports Games Pro Wakeboard Tournament on after a meeting with the riders. “Water conditions improved since the morning and the wind has back off little so we’ll get on the water see how it all plays out” said Hogarth.

Defending champion Shota Tezuka (Jpn) went into the competition as the favourite and started his run impressively with some massive moves however after a couple of falls he knew it was going to be a tough challenge to make a podium finish. “Last year, I felt so confident going into the final and maybe that over confidence pulled me unstuck this year” said Tezuka, adding “the conditions were tough out there on Koombana Bay and when the wind turned that made the water bumpy and difficult to land your tricks”.

Dark horse and local talent, Callan Starr was pretty happy with his flawless run and really pulled out some big moves to place second behind Teunissen.
Starr took on the testing waters of Koombana Bay and wasn’t too fazed by the choppy cross shore conditions. “Coming from WA, I’m pretty use to tough water condition and I love competing in the Action Sports Games so I’m very happy with finishing second as it is fantastic result for me.…thanks heaps Bunbury…I’ll be back” said Starr.

Teunissen is no stranger to the sometimes wild conditions of Western Australia and went into the tournament looking relaxed and confident so he certainly had the water conditions dialled in to suit his style. Checking out the conditions early and seeing what the other competitors had strung together on their runs, Teunissen went to work like a quality tradesman, building on his repertoire of moves. He started out by testing the conditions and once he had that sorted, he was unstoppable. Although Teusnissen was easily the standout of the tournament and the judges were impressed with his solid combinations of tricks, so they rewarded him accordingly.

Taking out first place, Teunissen was ecstatic, “I am so happy to finish first on the podium and, it gives me a lot of confidence going into the rest of year, so really happy I came to Bunbury…its such a beautiful place…I’ll be back that’s for sure”. Teunissen added.
